MR. SOMERSET BEAUMONT

said, he also wished to ask the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, if any communications have been addressed, during the recess, to Her Majesty's Government with the view to a recognition of an empire in Mexico; and, if so, whether he will lay them upon the table of the House.

MR. LAYARD

said, in reply, that no such communications had been received by Her Majesty's Government. Her Majesty's Government had hitherto declined to express any opinion on that subject.
