HC Deb 14 April 1864 vol 174 cc966-7
MR. R. LONG

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether Magistrates resident in places which are exempted from the operation of the Highway Act are, or are not, ex officio members of the General Highway Board of the district in which they reside?

SIR GEORGE GREY

stated, in reply, that the law required that magistrates, in order to be ex officio members of the General Highway Board, should reside within the highway district; and it was held that Magistrates residing in a place exempted from the operations of the Highway Act were not within the district contemplated in the Act, and therefore not ex offlcio members of the Highway Board. Several representations had been made to him on the subject, and it was one of the points which, in the amended Bill, would have to be considered.
