HC Deb 18 July 1859 vol 154 c1382
SIR MORTON PETO

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the state of the negotiations for the abolition of the State Tolls; and also if the notice of the termination of the Treaty of 1844, given by the Government of this country to the Government of Hanover, has been withdrawn?

LORD JOHN RUSSELL

replied that the question of the Stade Dues had been referred to the Law Officers of the Crown, but as it was deemed desirable that the existing Treaty should be renewed for a limited time, it was proposed that it should be renewed for a period of six months. In the meanwhile, however, the Law Officers of the Crown would continue to give careful attention to the subject, but of course the notice which had been given of the termination of the Treaty fell to the ground with its renewal.
