HC Deb 15 February 1858 vol 148 c1370
MR. CHILD

said, he would beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether it is the intention of the Government this Session to introduce any Bill to amend the laws relating to Weights and Measures?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

The question with respect to legislation on Weights and Measures was considered last Session, and I then stated the difficulty which would arise from the introduction of any compulsory law for the purpose of enforcing a uniformity of Weights and Measures. I shall be quite ready to receive any suggestion which the hon. Gentleman may wish to put into my hands; but I cannot at this moment undertake to introduce a Bill on the subject.
