HC Deb 10 March 1856 vol 140 c2112
SIR S. NORTHCOTE

asked the Secretary to the Treasury whether any petition had been received by the Treasury or the Board of Customs from the officers in the Department of the Receiver General of Customs, for increase of their salaries, in consequence of the increase of their official labours; whether any answer had been returned to such petition; and whether there would be any objection to lay the papers on the table?

MR. WILSON

replied, that such a petition had been received by the Board of Customs. No doubt additional duty had been imposed upon the department referred to; but four additional clerks had been appointed, and the Commissioners had, therefore, answered that they could not comply with the request? There would be an objection to lay those papers on the table.
