said, that a statement had appeared in the papers to the effect, that the Duke of Wellington had written a letter stating that he had ineffectually urged upon three different Governments the necessity of paying a greater regard to our national defences; and he therefore, seeing the First Lord of the Treasury in his place, would ask, if he had received any communication from the Commander-in-Chief on the subject?

LORD JOHN RUSSELL

Soon after I entered office I received a letter from the Duke of Wellington upon the subject, and I have been frequently since that period in communication with him upon it.
