HC Deb 25 February 1841 vol 56 c1022
Mr. E. Tennent

wished to ask a question of the noble Lord the Secretary of the Colonies in regard to a subject which had excited great sensation among the commercial classes. It was well known that the legislature of Jamaica had passed an act imposing an import duty of five per cent, on all goods imported into that colony. He feared that this would operate most injuriously to our commerce, and he wished to know whether the Colonial Act was likely to be confirmed by her Majesty's Government?

Lord John Russell

said, that Government had received notice of such a measure, but they had not as yet come to any decision in regard to it.
