§ Mr. Fox Maule moved, that the time for the first reading of bills to establish local courts for the recovery of small debts be extended till Monday, the 10th of May. If that motion were carried he should afterwards move that the further proceedings on all bills for the recovery of small debts, be postponed till Monday, the 10th of May.
§ Alderman Copelandcould not conceive on what ground the hon. Member wished to defer the consideration of those bills. He thought, that by assenting to the motion the House would be acting unfairly towards those parties who were interested in the establishment of local courts, and therefore he objected to the postponement. As the hon. Gentleman had no 1023 reasonable prospect of carrying his bill this Session, he suggested, that such bills as had been read a second time should be proceeded with.
§ Mr. Fox Maulesaid, he did not, like the hon. Member, despair of being able to carry the County Courts Bill this Session. He thought, that it would be a great hardship on private individuals to allow them to incur the expense of carrying their separate private bills through, and afterwards to render all their exertions useless by pressing the general bill, and under such circumstances, the House would be just as responsible for the expense to which the parties interested in these bills had been put.
§ Motion to extend the time for the first reading of the bill agreed to. On the motion that further proceedings on all bills for the recovery of small debts be postponed till May 10th, the House divided:—Ayes 40; Noes 39: Majority 1.
