Scope note
  • Only relevant to Private Bills. Used as a procedural term on successful motions. Private motions are usually tabled first in the House where the Private Bill is currently being considered, with an equivalent motion being considered by the other House, if passed. Messages pass between the Houses informing of the decision on the motion of the other House. Term is only used on the actual motion proceeding, not the messages.
Definition
  • To allow the promoters of a private bill originating in either House, in the current or previous Parliament, having not received the Royal Assent to have leave to proceed with the bill in the current session, with the consent of both Houses.
Editorial note
  • Governed by Private Business Standing order 188B (Commons) and 150B (Lords).
