HC Deb 05 November 1998 vol 318 c640W
Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will make a statement on the circumstances surrounding the sinking of the Arco Arum and subsequent salvage attempts in the Thames off Thurrock. [58077]

Ms Glenda Jackson

I believe my hon. Friend's question relates to the vessel Arco Arun. I understand that this aggregate dredger grounded off Broadness Point at approximately 1450 hours on 13 October. The vessel sustained a split in her hull and subsequently sank, clear of the navigation channel. No other vessels were involved, there were no casualties and, due to the quick response by the Port of London Authority, no damage to the environment. An inquiry by the Marine Accidents Investigation Branch is in progress and the PLA is conducting its own internal investigations. I understand that, following the appointment of salvors by the vessel owners, it became apparent that flooding had spread throughout the vessel and that specialist equipment would be required. The vessel owners have therefore now engaged the services of a company experienced in heavy lift and removal operations and they are currently assessing the situation.
