HC Deb 01 June 1998 vol 313 c55W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on the representations he has received on the case of Mr. Sukhvinder Singh Gill, Ref S474991; if he will meet hon. Members with an interest in the case to discuss those representations; and what action he proposes on the case. [43080]

Mr. Mike O'Brien

The most recent representations about Mr. Gill's case were received from my hon. Friend the Member for Leicester, South (Mr. Marshall) in September 1997. I am currently considering Mr. Gill's case and will inform his representatives of my decision in due course.

Mr. Stinchcombe

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what maintenance or income level is required in the assessment of entry clearance applications for settlement. [43199]

Mr. Mike O'Brien

Each case is considered on its own facts. The maintenance and accommodation criteria set out within the Rules meet the need to ensure that, where people are admitted for settlement, they will have the basic means to support and accommodate themselves and there will be no need for them to seek state assistance.
