To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what plans the Prison Service has to enable the recognition of the Prison Officers Association in private prisons. [42919]

[holding answer 21 May 1998]: The conditions of service, including membership of trades unions, of prisoner custody officers employed at a privately managed prison are a matter for negotiation between them and their employer, the contractor managing the prison, who is of course required to comply with all appropriate legislation.
