Sir Alastair Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development in which countries her Department is currently funding human rights education teams; and at what planned cost. [43123]

We support education on human rights as part of our support for human rights generally. For example, we support measures to raise awareness through education on the rights of the child. In Russia, we are piloting civic and human rights education in secondary schools. In Guyana, we are promoting a rights-based approach to children's education among Amerindian populations. We also help to raise knowledge and awareness of democratic rights and responsibilities. In Zimbabwe, we are contributing to a four-year project of civic education, leading to the general election in 2000. As part of this, churches and leading human rights organisations are conducting a programme of education on democratic and electoral rights. We also support measures to educate and raise awareness about international humanitarian law (IHL). In the Commonwealth of Independent States, we provided funds to the ICRC to develop IHL materials, train IHL trainers and establish a lecture series in IHL at key law institutions.
