HC Deb 01 June 1998 vol 313 cc36-7W
Sir Alastair Goodlad

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development what representations she has made to her EU counterparts about the need for additional assistance for Sudan; and if she will make a statement. [43121]

Clare Short

The crisis in Sudan was discussed during the EU Development Council meeting which I chaired on 18 May. We reaffirmed our intention to provide further assistance and to call upon the Government of Sudan and the Southern factions to agree a ceasefire and a peace settlement. It is clear that the cause of the crises is the war and without peace there will be continuing crises.

Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development if she will make a statement on the present level of British aid to Sudan; to what sectors and categories it is apportioned; and to what jurisdictions and areas it is delivered. [42348]

Clare Short

Since February, we have given over £5 million to United Nations agencies and international NGOs in Sudan for the provision of food, nutrition and health support and survival kits for displaced families; the current crisis in Bahr El Ghazal region has been a key focus for this assistance. I approved a further £5 million on 15 May which will be used over the coming months to meet urgent humanitarian needs in this region and other vulnerable areas in Sudan.
