HC Deb 31 July 1998 vol 317 c724W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what plans he has to replace the spent nuclear submarine fuel ponds at BNFL Sellafield; and if he will make a statement. [53757]

Mr. Spellar

The current 'B27' store at BNFL Sellafield has a finite life. MOD has contracted BNFL to provide a replacement used fuel storage service for spent submarine reactor fuel for a period of forty years from 1 December 2001. Using their own funds, BNFL are currently designing and constructing the new facility and will transfer all submarine reactor fuel from the existing B27 store by 2011. The sums invested by BNFL will be recovered within the agreed charge for the storage service.
