HC Deb 17 February 1998 vol 306 c532W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what assessment he has made of the advantages of India becoming a permanent member of the UN Security Council. [29575]

Mr. Fatchett

We want to see an early enlargement of the Security Council and better representation on it for developing countries. It is widely expected that India, given its long and important contribution to the United Nations, would be a candidate for permanent membership of the Security Council if additional permanent seats were created.
