To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the enlargement of NATO. [29577]

§ Mr. Fatchett
As my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister told the House on 9 July, Britain, together with our NATO Allies at the NATO Summit on 8 July invited Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic to begin accession talks to join NATO. On 16 December, my right hon. Friend the Foreign Secretary, together with his NATO colleagues, signed the Accession Protocols. A debate on NATO enlargement will take place in the House before the Government ratify the Accession protocols.
