HC Deb 12 February 1998 vol 306 c354W
Mr. Hesford

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what plans he has to deal with shortfalls in GP recruitment; and if he will make a statement. [28288]

Mr. Milburn

We are introducing a series of measures to enhance the attractiveness of general practice. Measures such as the salaried doctors scheme, an improved retainer scheme and Primary Care Act pilots will provide more flexible employment opportunities and be of particular help in areas with the greatest recruitment problems. The establishment of Primary Care Groups, as set out in the White Paper "The New NHS", will also give general practitioners and other primary care professionals greater scope to influence the development of health services locally.
