HC Deb 12 February 1998 vol 306 c372W
Mr. Stunell

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what discussions he has had with the Belgian authorities on the incidence of BSE in that country, and the regulation of meat imports therefrom; and if he will make a statement. [27470]

Mr. Rooker

Belgium has had one case of BSE. That case has been discussed extensively by the European Commission's Standing Veterinary Committee on which the UK is represented by the Chief Veterinary Officer or one of his veterinary staff. On the basis of the controls on the production and marketing of meat laid down in Community law, there is no reason for imposing additional controls on the import of meat from Belgium.
