To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many veterinary surgeons are employed by(a) his Department and (b) other public bodies, for animal inspection duties; and what proportion of these are (i) United Kingdom citizens, (ii) citizens of other EU countries and (iii) other nationals. In the State Veterinary Service, there are 310 directly employed Veterinary Surgeons. Of these, 301 are UK Citizens, five are Citizens of other EU Member States and four are other nationals.

In the Joint Food Safety and Standards Group there are 13 directly employed Veterinary Surgeons. Of these 12 are UK Citizens and one is a Citizen of another EU Member State.

In the Veterinary Laboratories Agency there are 93 directly employed Veterinary Surgeons. Of these, 91 are UK Citizens and two are Citizens of other EU Member States.

The Meat Hygiene Service directly employs 48 Veterinary Surgeons. Of these, 39 are UK Citizens, six are Citizens of other EU Member States and three are other Nationals. The Meat Hygiene Service also contracts out Veterinary Services to Veterinary Agencies and Practices. There are 486 Official Veterinary Surgeons employed in this way. Of these, 408 are UK Citizens, 73 are Citizens of other EU Member States and five are other nationals.

The Department does not keep records of Veterinary Surgeons employed by other Public Bodies.
