HC Deb 17 December 1998 vol 322 cc672-3W
Mr. Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment how many claimants who have been eligible for the New Deal entered the gateway and then ceased drawing benefit when leaving the gateway after being offered a choice of options and did not go onto draw other benefits or go into education. [62301]

Mr. Andrew Smith

[holding answer 3 December 1998]: Disaggregation according to whether they have been offered New Deal options is not presently available. This will be examined in the New Deal evaluation.

Mr. Keetch

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list the monthly expenditure on(a) Gateway provision and (b) other provision for the New Deal for young people by region from January to the end of September. [63276]

Mr. Andrew Smith

[pursuant to his reply, 15 December 1998, c. 478]: I am providing a revised response as the figures in my earlier reply had been corrupted during data transmission and were therefore incorrect.

The correct position is that expenditure brought to account by the Employment service since national roll-out of New Deal is £4.36 million for Gateway and £42.79 million for other provision. Separate regional figures are not available for the Pathfinder districts between January and March 1998 as all expenditure was accounted for centrally during that period. The figures for April to September 1998 are shown in the following table.
