HC Deb 20 March 1997 vol 292 c830W
12. Mr. Simpson

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the current annual cost of keeping a young person in(a) secure accommodation and (b) youth custody. [19793]

Miss Widdecombe

The cost of providing secure accommodation for young persons is a matter for individual local authorities. The Prison Service is responsible for meeting the costs incurred by local authorities in detaining juveniles sentenced under section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933. The average annual cost of such detention is currently £126,022.

In 1995–96, the average cost per place in young offender institutions was £17,507 in closed establishments and £16,741 in open establishments.
