To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what proportion of 18 to 21-year-olds in Northern Ireland are(a) Protestants and (b) Roman Catholics. [8101]

The 1991 census of population contains information on the breakdown of the population of Northern Ireland by religious denomination. The information in relation to the population aged 18 to 21 years is as follows:

Percentage of 18 to 21-year-olds
Roman Catholic 42.38
Presbyterian, Church of Ireland and Methodist 39.47
Others 8.09
Answered "None" to the question on religion 3.74
Did not answer the Religion question 6.32

The "others" category contains some non-Christian religions. A detailed breakdown of the denominations in this category is provided in table 8A of the "Northern Ireland census 1991 summary report: HMSO 1992".
