To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is his policy in respect of the separate funding arrangement administered by the Scottish Office Education Department to the Scottish Chess Association. [25190]

Mr. Robertson

The Scottish Office Education and Industry Department provides grant funding to the Scottish Chess Association to assist with the cost of operating its headquarters administration. Grant is paid through a scheme which assists national voluntary organisations in the community education field in terms of the Further Education (Approved Associations) (Scotland) Grant Regulations 1989. Grant support to SCA takes into account costs of promoting the development of chess amongst young people particularly through schools.
