HC Deb 30 October 1995 vol 265 c27W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is his calculation of the additional accident rates of company cars; and what measure he plans to introduce to reduce the accident totals. [39818]

Mr. Norris

The annual involvement in injury accidents per 10,000 vehicles is given in "Transport Statistics Great Britain 1995", HMSO; for vehicles registered in 1991 to 1993 the accident involvement in 1993 was 128 per 10,000 privately owned cars and 192 per 10,000 company cars.

My Department works with, and grant aids, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, which is a key provider of driver training courses to companies. These have reduced accidents among company car drivers and have proved cost-effective for employers. The Department is conducting research on the effectiveness of driver training and other fleet management safety policies. Many road safety measures, aimed at all drivers, will also cut accidents among company car drivers.
