HC Deb 07 November 1995 vol 265 c746W
Sir John Stanley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the number of home owners in Britain in 1979; and what is the number at present. [41874]

Mr. Gummer

An estimated 10.2 million households owned their own home in 1979, and 15.4 million in 1993, the most recent year for which figures are available for the whole of Great Britain.

These estimates are based on the general household survey and the survey of English housing. Like all estimates from surveys, they are liable to sampling variability.
