HC Deb 22 May 1995 vol 260 cc416-7W
Mr. Byers

To ask the Secretary of State for Education what is the total number of teachers for each year over the last 10 years taking early retirement; how many of these retirements were on medical or breakdown grounds; and what was the total annual cost of these retirements. [24937]

Mr. Robin Squire

The total number of teachers granted early retirement and, of these, the number granted infirmity and premature retirement in each of the years 1984–85 to 1993–94 is given in table 1. The first year cost to the teachers superannuation scheme of these retirements and the total expenditure by LEAs on pension enhancements and Crombie compensation for each year from 1989–90 to 1993–94 is given in table 2. Figures for the first year cost to the TSS of early retirements for the years 1984–85 to 1988–89 and for the total annual cost to the TSS of all early retirements could be produced only at disproportionate cost. Figures for LEA expenditure on pension enhancements and Crombie compensation for the years 1984–85 to 1988–89 are not available.
