HC Deb 04 May 1995 vol 259 cc296-7W
Mr. Mackinlay

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what are the estimated additional(a) daily costs and (b) total costs to date incurred by the Essex police as a consequence of the live animal exports protests at Brightlingsea; and if he will make a statement; [22195]

(2) if he will reimburse wholly or in part the additional costs incurred by the Essex police as a consequence of the live animal exports protests at Brightlingsea; and if he will make a statement. [22196]

Mr. Maclean

I understand from the chief constable that the average additional daily cost for the period to 15 April is estimated to be £19,580. The estimated total additional cost for the same period is £1,840,514.

The Home Office will reimburse 51 per cent. of the police expenditure incurred at Brightlingsea prior to 1 April 1995. After that date police grant is paid as a cash-limited sum and contributes to the cost of all police operations.
