Mr. Spearing

To ask the Secretary of State for Health from what date a compulsory requirement for junior doctors to serve in a casualty and accident department ceased to apply; what consultations took place between her Department and the relevant medical authorities concerning this change; and what estimate she has made of the impact of these measures on the supply of junior doctors to other departments. Mr. Malone

The content of training programmes for junior doctors is the responsibility of the relevant royal college or faculty. Since January 1994, it has not been compulsory for doctors wishing to sit the fellowship

2 1993 figures are provisional. The system of coding underlying cause of death in England and Wales was changed on 1 January 1993.

Numbers for 1993 may not be comparable to earlier years for some causes, including suicide and injury undetermined whether accidentally or purposely inflicted. Work is continuing to clarify this, and further details will be available later in the year.
