To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department, how many mentally ill people having come before a court with an offence punishable by imprisonment have been subject to a section 37 hospital order under the Mental Health Act 1983 for each year since 1989. [26644]

This information, which is published annually in a Home Office Statistical Bulletin "Statistics of Mentally Disordered Offenders England and Wales", copies of which are in the Library, is given in the table. The figures for 1994 are not yet available.
