Sir John Wheeler

[holding answer 14 July 1995]: In the last 12 months, one case of unfair dismissal was brought against the Department of Finance and Personnel. The case was withdrawn before it came to hearing. Legal costs of £2,966.52, including VAT, were incurred by the Department; no compensation was paid to the officer dismissed. One unfair dismissal case was brought against the Department of Environment for Northern Ireland and it was successful. The total cost, including legal fees and compensation, was £3,300.

One officer in the Northern Ireland Office has made an application for unfair dismissal to the office of the industrial tribunal. This case has not come to hearing.
