§ Sir John Wheeler[holding answer 14 July 1995]: In 1994–95 358,059 days were lost through sick absence, representing 6.6 per cent. of the total number of potential working days. It is estimated that the cost of sick absence in 1994–95 was £24.8 million.
These statistics exclude industrial staff whose records are not held centrally.
