To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many days were lost in sickness absence in the last 12 months by employees in his Department(a) in total and (b) as a proportion of the number of days worked; and what was the cost of this absence. [34609]

[holding answer 14 July 1995]: In 1994–95 358,059 days were lost through sick absence, representing 6.6 per cent. of the total number of potential working days. It is estimated that the cost of sick absence in 1994–95 was £24.8 million.

These statistics exclude industrial staff whose records are not held centrally.
