HC Deb 18 July 1995 vol 263 cc1180-1W
Mr. Hicks

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the number of service personnel and civilians employed at RN College, Dartmouth and HMS Raleigh, Torpoint, for the last three years for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement on their contribution to their local economies. [34216]

Mr. Soames

This matter is for the Naval Recruiting and Training Agency under its framework document. I have asked the chief executive to write to the hon. Member.

Letter front A. D. Ferguson to Mr. Robert Hicks, dated 18 July 1995: The Secretary of State for Defence has asked the Chief Executive of the Naval Recruiting and Training Agency to reply to your Parliamentary Question about the number of Service personnel and civilians employed at the Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and at HMS Raleigh, and the economic contribution that these establishments make to their respective local economies. I am replying in the absence of the Chief Executive.

The number of Service and civilian employees at the establishments for the last three years is as follows:

1992–93 1993–94 1994–95
BRNC Dartmouth
Service personnel n/a 120 119
MOD civilian personnel n/a 186 165.5
HMS Raleigh
Service personnel 600 565 553
MOD civilian personnel 154 122 120
It is impossible to accurately quantify the contribution of Naval shore training establishments to their local economies. Both establishments provide local employment and the spending power of establishment personnel and students contributes to the local economy and that of the surrounding area. In the case of BRNC in particular, the College is the major employer for the isolated town of Dartmouth and also provides opportunities for trade to local businesses and shops. This is especially important during winter months as the town's micro-economy is principally based on tourism.
