The Secretary of State for Defence has asked the Chief Executive of the Naval Recruiting and Training Agency to reply to your Parliamentary Question about the number of Service personnel and civilians employed at the Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth and at HMS Raleigh, and the economic contribution that these establishments make to their respective local economies. It is impossible to accurately quantify the contribution of Naval shore training establishments to their local economies. Both establishments provide local employment and the spending power of establishment personnel and students contributes to the local economy and that of the surrounding area. In the case of BRNC in particular, the College is the major employer for the isolated town of Dartmouth and also provides opportunities for trade to local businesses and shops. This is especially important during winter months as the town's micro-economy is principally based on tourism.
