HL Deb 01 November 1994 vol 558 c58WA
Lord Cochrane of Cults

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the statutory basis on which the Confederation for the Registration of Gas Installers (CORGI) refuses to issue registrations that relate directly to the training undertaken by applicants.

Lord Inglewood

The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1994, which come into force on 31 October 1994, require anyone who works with gas fittings to be competent. These regulations update and consolidate previous gas safety legislation of 1984 and 1990.

Under criteria set down by the Health and Safety Executive, the Council for Registered Gas Installers (CORGI) is required to assess the competence of any business applying for registration. If CORGI considers that the business' operatives are insufficiently trained, then appropriate training must be completed before registration can take place.
