§ Mr. AitkenOne hundred and twenty-seven Challenger 2 tanks are already on order from Vickers Defence Systems. As my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for Defence announced to the House of Commons Defence Committee on 1 December, subject to the negotiation of satisfactory contractual terms we intend to place a further order for up to 259 more of these tanks. The number of main battle tanks that will be in service with the British Army by the end of the century will therefore be up to 386.
