HC Deb 14 June 1994 vol 244 cc355-6W
Mr. David Porter

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps he is taking to prevent differences between excise duties in the United Kingdom and France affecting pubs and clubs in the United Kingdom; and if he will make a statement.

Sir John Cope

Customs are taking firm action against individuals attempting to evade duty and compete unfairly against legitimate trade by smuggling alcoholic drinks and tobacco. Those involved run the risks of losing the imported goods and the vehicle used to transport them, and of a prison sentence of up to seven years. In the 15 months to March 1994, customs made 1,588 detections involving £2.3 million in revenue.
