HL Deb 21 February 1994 vol 552 c41WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What was the total number of magistrates' courts in England and Wales:

  1. (a) in 1984;
  2. (b) at the latest date for which figures are available.

The Lord Chancellor

There are currently about 600 magistrates' courthouses, some of which are used on a part-time basis and may be shared with other users. Magistrates' courthouses are either leased, rented or owned by local authorities rather than by my department. It is only comparatively recently that reliable information about the number of courthouses has become available, and therefore it is not possible to give the information requested for the year 1984.
