HL Deb 25 November 1993 vol 550 cc10-1WA
Lord Braine of Wheatley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will place in the Library of the House as much information as is in their possession about the case of Raoul Wallenberg.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

We are not in possession of papers detailing what happened to Raoul Wallenberg. A Swedish/Russian Commission was set up in 1991 to investigate the full facts surrounding Mr. Wallenberg's disappearance. We assume the Swedish Government will publish any further details about Mr. Wallenberg's fate which may be uncovered by the Commission.

Lord Braine of Wheatley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have received about Raoul Wallenberg; and what recent representations they have made to the Government of the former Soviet. Union.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

The Russian authorities have still not given a full account of what happened to the Swedish diplomat, Raoul Wallenberg, after his arrest in 1945. We have made a number of representations in the past to the former Soviet authorities in support of Swedish demands for a full explanation of Mr. Wallenberg's fate. A joint Swedish Russian Commission is now investigating the case and has been granted access to files held by the former Soviet Ministry of Foreign Affairs and by the KGB. We believe this Commission represents the most likely means of uncovering the facts of this case.
