§ 24. Mr. Austin MitchellTo ask the Secretary of State for Defence what is his estimate of the saving to the defence budget from withdrawing British forces from Germany.
§ Mr. HanleyOver the period 1990–91 to 1995–96, the defence budget, excluding the cost of the Gulf conflict and redundancies, is expected to reduce by around 12 per cent. in real terms. While the operating cost of maintaining British forces in Germany is expected to reduce by around £500 million in real terms between 1991–92 and 1993–94, it is not possible to identify separately the savings of withdrawing British forces from Germany.
