HL Deb 03 November 1993 vol 549 c128WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What response they have so far received from the United Nations on the proposal for sending an assessment team to the southern marshes of Iraq; and if not, when they expect to receive a reply.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (Baroness Chalker of Wallasey)

We understand the UN Special Commission (UNSCOM) is seeking evidence on allegations that Iraqi forces have used chemical weapons on the Marsh Arabs. It is not yet clear whether an inspection visit to the southern marshes of Iraq will be mounted. We are prepared to support UNSCOM if they decide to send a mission.
