HC Deb 14 May 1993 vol 224 c590W
Mr. Nigel Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many operations the national health service performed in England in 1992 and in 1979.

Mr. Sackville

In 1989–90, the latest year for which information is available, an estimated 3.8 million non-maternity operations were performed in the national health service in England. The information is based on counts of finished consultant episodes. In 1979, there were 2.5 million non-maternity operations. Information for 1979 is based on numbers of discharges and deaths and is, not therefore, directly comparable.
