HC Deb 14 May 1993 vol 224 c590W
Mr. Nigel Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for Health (1) how many in-patients were treated by the national health service in England in 1992 and in 1979;

(2) how many out-patients were treated by the national health service in England in 1992 and in 1979.

Mr. Sackville

In 1991–92, there were 7,759,000 in-patients and 36,941,000 out-patients treated in the NHS in England. This information is based on counts of finished consultant episodes. In 1979, 5,400,000 in-patients and 34,100,000 out-patients were treated. In-patient information for 1979 is based on numbers of discharges and deaths and is, therefore, not directly comparable.
