1994. Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will list the environmental improvement schemes undertaken as part of the valleys initiative in each year from 1990; and if he will list forthcoming environmental schemes to be developed under the initiative in(a) 1993 and (b)

Mr. David Hunt

Under the programme for the valleys the Welsh Development Agency has supported 134 environmental improvement schemes since 1990.

Projects have included: £
Garden Festival Approaches 383,000
Dowlais Top landscape works (Part of WDA/Welsh Office heads of valleys corridor project) 114,000
Landscape Works: Rassau and Gamlydan
Housing Estate
Blaenau Gwent 76,000
Landscape Works: Cefn Golau Housing Estate 17,000
Taff Trail long distance cycleway 95,000
Taff Valley Coed Cymru initiative 18,000
Alltwen Triangle landscaping 20,000
Brynamen Road landscaping Gwaun Cae Gurwen 25,000
Seven Sisters town centre improvements 48,000
Resolven town centre improvements 68,000
Resolven canal basin 50,000

In addition many environmental improvement projects have been supported by the urban programme and by groundwork trusts. It would not be possible to list every individual scheme other than at disproportionate cost.

Future Development

The WDA will be promoting a number of landscape and forest strategies in the valleys programme area. Four areas have so far been identified, namely: Blaenau Gwent, Rhymney, Rhondda and Ogwr.

In each case there will be a package of action based on a landscape masterplan including the planting of new woodlands, management of existing woodlands, the upgrading of land reclamation sites, and a range of amenity creation and landscape projects in the urban fringe. These will be achieved in partnerships which will include local authorities, the Forest Authority and the Countryside Council for Wales.
