HC Deb 05 May 1993 vol 224 cc113-4W
Mr. Home Robertson

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many fords there are in Wales where public roads cross watercourses; how many fatal or serious accidents have occurred in each of the last 10 years as a result of vehicles failing to negotiate water on fords on public roads; if he will list fords which have been closed to traffic following such accidents; and what is his Department's policy towards fords and the provision of warning to motorists when water conditions may be dangerous.

Sir Wyn Roberts

There are no fords crossing trunk roads in Wales. Information on local authority roads is not held centrally. There are warning signs prescribed in the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 1981 which local authorities can use to alert drivers to the existence of a ford and to the depth of water.
