HC Deb 15 March 1993 vol 221 cc113-6W
Mrs. Ewing

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish the output from Scottish colleges of education of graduate secondary school teachers in each specialist subject and the number employed in each such subject by each regional council for the last three years for which such information is available; and what are the projected figures for the current academic year.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

[holding answer 10 March 1993]: The available information is set out in the tables. The numbers of graduates from the Scottish colleges of education in 1991–92 and 1992–93 have been estimated by applying historical success ratios to the number of final year students in training. Detailed information on the number of secondary teachers by subject employed by each regional council is collected only in alternate years; figures for 1990–91 and provisional figures for 1992–93 are given in the table. In 1989–90 and 1991–92 only the total number of teachers per region is collected. Totals may not always exactly equal the sum of their component parts due to rounding.
