HL Deb 21 July 1993 vol 548 c44WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What reply was made by the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Mr. Vo Van Kiet, to human rights concerns raised with him during his visit to Britain of 3rd to 6th July; and whether Her Majesty's Government now believe that the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam will be allowed to operate freely, and that the Buddhist monks detained by the authorities on 24th May, the Ven Thich Tri Tuu, the Ven Thich Hai Tang and the Ven Thich Hai Thinh, will now be released.

Baroness Chalker of Wallasey

In response to our expressions of concern about Vietnam's human rights record, Mr. Vo Van Kiet said that Vietnam was happy to maintain the dialogue on human rights issues with the Government and others in Britain who were concerned about observance of human rights in Vietnam. We will continue to press the Vietnamese authorities to ensure religious freedoms are guaranteed and for the early release of the Buddist monks detained on 24th May.
