To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what percentage of pensioners had an income of less than £5,000 a year, at the latest available date.

It is estimated1 that 61 per cent. of single pensioners2 had an income of less than £5,000 per year in 1988 (the latest available date).

2 Based on pensioner units—i.e., single people over state pension age and couples where the husband is aged 65 or over, regardless of whether they are drawing state pension.
