Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what were the numbers and proportion of people who fell below 50 per cent. of average income before and after housing costs in(a) Scotland, (b) England, (c) Wales and (d) Northern Ireland in 1979 and in 1988–89.

Mr. Burt

Reliable information in the form requested could be provided only at disproportionate cost. Information for the United Kingdom as a whole is available in Households Below Average Income: a Statistical Analysis 1979–1988–89 (HMSO 1992), a copy of which is in the Library.
