HC Deb 11 January 1993 vol 216 cc560-1W
Mr. French

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what meetings he, or his officials, have had with the President of Kazakhstan; and what was discussed.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs met President Nazerbayev of Kazakhstan during his visit to Britain in October 1991 and during his visit to Alma Ata in January 1992. The development of relations between the United Kingdom and Kazakhstan, including the good prospects for trade and other matters, including regional and security matters, were discussed.

Mr. French

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is the current diplomatic link between the United Kingdom and Kazakhstan; and when he expects to appoint a British ambassador to Kazakhstan.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

The United Kingdom recognised Kazakhstan on 31 December 1991. Sir Brian Fall, who resides at Moscow, is accredited as Her Majesty's ambassador to the Republic of Kazakhstan and presented his credentials in Alma Ata on 27 October 1992. We have established a small British embassy in Alma Ata, headed by a resident chargé d'affaires.
