HC Deb 26 February 1993 vol 219 c753W
Mr. William O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what are the operational costs of the bypasses for the A1(M) for(a) Bartley, (b) Chester le Street, (c) Darlington, (d) Durham and (e) Newton Aycliffe.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

The 27-mile, 43 km, A1M from the North Yorkshire County Durham boundary to south of Tyneside was built as a single strategic route, not as a series of bypasses and opened in sections over the period between 1965 and 1969. The average annual route maintenance cost over the last five years was £0.5 million per year. The average major maintenance over the same period was £2 million per year.
